When Will You Bet On You?
Jun 09, 2025
Betting On Yourself Isn’t About Arrogance... It’s About Energy.
There’s this odd little voice that can creep in when we dare to back ourselves in midlife.
Who does she think she is?
Bit full of herself, isn’t she?
She should be grateful for what she’s got…
And we don’t always need others to say it. We say it to ourselves... on loop.
But let me say this...
It’s about choosing where you want to put that energy.
Not into proving, pleasing, or pushing, but into creating, building, and becoming.
Midlife Is A Game of Energy Management
When we were younger, it felt like there was this endless reservoir, right? You could chase opportunities, juggle responsibilities, burn the candle at both ends, and somehow still bounce back.
Midlife changes that, hugely!
Your energy becomes finite and precious. You start noticing who and what drains it, and who and what fuels it.
Betting on yourself is simply recognising that reality and choosing to place your chips wisely.
Not because you’re better than anyone or because you need to prove anything. You know that if you don’t back yourself now, no one’s going to come along and do it for you.
How I Placed The Bet On Myself
I’m not writing this from the side lines, trust me, I’ve been the woman leaking energy in a life that no longer fit and I'm neither proud nor sad about it. Although I wish I was stronger and more determined many years ago!
Walking away wasn’t about corporate life itself. When you’re in the right environment, with leadership and values that align with your own, you can thrive. But when you feel like you've walked through the wrong door, when the culture and energy are misaligned, it will eat away at you, slowly and surely.
This is where I found myself and was determined to fix it.
My health was poor because I had no work-life balance.
I was surrounded by behaviours I could no longer stomach.
Every day felt like a performance, where I had to psych myself up to tolerate situations and decisions I couldn’t stand behind.
Even though I knew how to maintain a positive mindset, it became harder and harder when the energy around me was so off.
And that’s the thing: it’s not corporate life that burns us out, it’s staying in the wrong environment for too long and that goes for any environment not just your work one.
Now you could argue that it was just me who didn't fit, and you'd be right. We all know when something/someone is off, we just tend to ignore it as the fall out of a situation can be too overwhelming to even think about. So planning, timing and preparing sets you up for taking on the journey of something new.
At the same time, my marriage had unravelled. After so many years together, letting go was not easy, nor was it done lightly.
However sometimes, the most powerful choice we can make is to release what no longer serves us, with respect, with learning, and with a clear intention to move forward.
And what I’ve learned is this:
When one chapter closes, it creates space... space to evolve, to reconnect with yourself, and to consciously shape what comes next.
I’m now in a relationship that is grounded in deep connection, respect, and shared vision, because I took the time to understand what I truly wanted and needed. That clarity, that intention, is what makes the difference.
Every ending holds the seed of a new beginning.
It’s what you choose to plant that matters.
So moving to the Middle East wasn’t just a relocation. It was my escape and my clean slate, the chance to design a life on my terms.
I created The Life Edits deliberately, value-led, and entirely mine. Now, as I shape my consultancy and coaching businesses, I carry this hard-won insight with me:
Environment is everything.
In work, in relationships, in life.
When you’re in the wrong one, no amount of mindset work will fix it.
When you’re in the right one, your energy soars.
This is life.
The Hidden Cost of Doubt
Every time you hesitate, second-guess, or tell yourself, "I can’t", you leak energy.
It doesn’t feel like much at first, a little fatigue here, a little irritation there, but over time it adds up.
You become stuck in a loop of low confidence and low momentum.
So what's the alternative?
Placing small, consistent bets on yourself, daily.
-
Saying YES to the project that excites you.
-
Taking the course that stretches you.
-
Investing in coaching or support that moves you forward.
-
Absolutely saying NO to the things (and people) that no longer fit.
Each one a little bet, a little energy shift, that reinforces your belief in what’s possible.
Confidence Isn’t a Personality Trait... It’s an Energy State
People talk about confidence like it’s something you have or don’t have, but in my experience, it’s something you generate.
And it’s entirely connected to where your energy is flowing.
When your energy is constantly spent on pleasing others, playing small, or trying to avoid criticism, there’s none left to fuel your own growth.
When you start placing energy in the direction of your goals, your desires, your next chapter confidence follows.
Not in a loud, look-at-me way, but in a grounded, calm, I-know-who-I-am way.
And that energy? It’s magnetic.
People notice. Opportunities notice.
Life notices.
Betting On Yourself is Bold, But It’s Also Bloody Necessary
Look, I get it, I hear you and I see you.
After decades of being the dependable one, the steady one, the giver, shifting that energy back onto yourself can feel… selfish.
It can feel like you’re stepping out of line.
Here's what I can tell you...
No one wins when you stay stuck in energy debt.
Not your family, not your workplace, not your friends.
When you bet on yourself, when you choose to fuel your own fire, everyone around you benefits from the woman who shows up more alive, more lit up, more aligned.
So if you needed permission today, here it is:
Place the bet.
Reclaim the energy.
Back yourself, boldly.
It’s not arrogance.
It’s life force.
And it’s yours to use.
Here for you always
Lisa
